Long Richard – Force Myself / Lovin Cup. 1968 USA ~ Sacramento, California

The a) side is a drifty psych blues number with piano, electric guitar, and impassioned vocals. Has a jazzy styled rhythm. Vocals are strong and of the late 60s West Coast style. b) is a Butterfield Blues Band number. Again, bluesy in nature, but the psychedelic guitar playing takes it to the next level. Even some Steppenwolf styled riffing. Good two sider.

J.B. Green & Born Again - Rock Me Baby / Time. 1976 USA

A very interesting 45, as the music presented is not really single material. It's mostly a type of instrumental psychedelic jazz, very mellow, with fuzzy lead guitar, though not overly amplified. The a) side has vocals and is based in the blues, but once again it sounds more psych jazz than anything. 

I've read they're from Texas without corroboration. Discogs says the label is from Dallas but that's based on the record being pressed by A&R. I know the record plant from my days in DFW, but that doesn't mean the label or artist is from there. I didn't realize Josey Records owns it now.

Steve Akin – It's Heavy / I'm Trippin' Alone. 1970 USA ~ Houston, Texas

First track is heavily reliant on the blues, with some country, folk, and rural vibes. The flip is faster with some nice acoustic guitar jamming, and vocals that have a distant resemblance to Jimi Hendrix. Not bad. I wouldn't call it funk or psych though, which is what you'll see out there.

Charlie Burton and Rock Therapy - Rock and Roll Behavior / That Boy and My Girl. 1977 USA-Nebraska

When I found this I thought it would be big money. It looks like some underground punk 45 - and from 1977! Nope. The A) side is retro 50's rock but with a 70s hard rock guitar solo, which is the highlight of both sides. B) side is more towards blues rock. From Lincoln, Nebraska. I'm keeping it for now. 

Own. From a thrift store in Sheridan, Wyoming (2024).

Grey Controversy - Now is the Time / Blues in G. 1969 USA-Connecticut

From New London. A side is a slow rock harmonic tune driven by organ and bass. Somewhat like Procol Harum. At 5:40, a long track for the singles market. And they stretched it well past its shelf life. B side is organ / guitar based 12 bar blues. Largely unknown. Not in RYM, so I'll rate this 2.5 stars here.

The Rodeo – Millie The Pro / Felicia-Jo. 197? Louisiana

From Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Likely from 1971 or 72. A side has a blues rock sound that recalls Creedence Clearwater Revival. B) is much better only due to the presence of fuzz guitar. Still sounds like Fogerty singing though.

The Challengers - Moon, Send My Baby / Dream. 1971 USA-North Carolina

From eastern North Carolina. What a strange opening to a 45. Vocalist croons "Let's go to the moon" followed by a bluesy guitar solo. Eventually it rips into a fast soul like dancer. It's kind of a mess, but intriguing all the same. B) side sounds like a rip of The Everly Brothers. Dream, dream, dream.

Night Watch - Babey Blues / Battle Cries. 1984 USA

Another great discovery, the b) side has an intriguing prog meets neo classical metal sound. So it turns out to be from 1984 right at the advent of the neo prog movement, with traces of hard rock and metal. Sure would love to hear a whole album of this! The a) side is completely different and is blues rock, old school style. But... and it's a big one... it features a killer psych solo! What an interesting find. The photo on RYM has WKNH, which is a station in Keene, New Hampshire. Maybe they were from the region?

Patti Parker - Bobby McGee / If I Were Your Woman. USA

The a) side is the same song that Janis Joplin covered (with an adjusted title), and is just as annoying. Country blues. Not for me. The flip is more geared toward Diana Ross. Soul pop during the psychedelic era. Probably my least favorite 45 spec buy from last year. Can't win 'em all. But I'll hold on to it for now, since the b) side is nice enough.
