Pappys Hauted House - One More Time / Dude. 1972 USA ~ Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

One of those classic misspellings that that no doubt haunted (had to do it) the band for years to come. The a) side is mostly soul / jazz with the song belonging to the former and the organ to the latter. Nice wah wah rhythms and horns. It's the b) side that ignites the flame here. They add in wicked fuzz, and primarily go psychedelic with some hints of funk.

The leader of the band was John Papi, who is the organ player, and led a jazz trio at one point. He's quite an interesting character. Much more info about him can be found here: https://oldmonmusic.blogspot.com/2010/01/john-papi.html

Parente Band – Tramp / New Day. 1971 USA ~ Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Both sides are high energy instrumental jazz funk tunes. Great grooves on this one. The only soloist is the tenor saxophonist. I like his style, busy, melodic, and never out of control. The horn section is tight, and one could call this big band rock. Oddly, there are two distinct pressings for this 45. I've included the more informative one.

The Jaggerz - I Call My Baby Candy / Will She Believe Me? 1970 USA ~ Pittsburgh, Pennyslvania

The tale of two sides. The a) side is a trite bit of bubblegum boogie soul and is scant worth mentioning. I suspect that's where most everyone gets off this train. But hang in there folks, as it gets really great, really fast. On the six minutes flip (yep, six) you are treated to some early fuzz, followed by some funk rock, and then a lengthy organ, bass, drums jam reminding me of Sugarloaf or even first album Santana. The side closes as it starts with more fuzz. A great track hidden on the cushy side of the gum on your shoe. Don't miss this one, and it's common as raisins.

Racket - It's Our Night / Cruisin' (Down Main Street). 1981 USA-Pittsburgh

An older sounding 45 than the date suggests, while there is synthesizer, there's also Hammond organ and phased guitar. A better than average hard rock, and it looks to be related in some way to Poobah (Peppermint Productions). Good stuff.

Recent evidence places this 45 from 1981 and the band is from Pittsburgh.

Buffoon - Lisa / Greetings. 1974 USA-Pittsburgh

Another week, another unknown prog rock single. Buffoon were from Pittsburgh and this appears to be their only output. Nothing is known about them. They're a bit early for the classic Midwest prog sound, and it becomes obvious the UK prog bands of the early 70s are the primary influence. One can hear Tony Kaye era Yes as well. Great organ, psychedelic guitar, and rough-hewn vocals define these two great tracks. 'Lisa' is the better of the two songs, but 'Greetings' is great too (and you can hear it on YouTube).
